You're Easier to Control Than You Think

INTRO

Welcome to The Binge.

No interviews. No fake laughter. Just one story—or one idea—that'll get under your skin and stay there long after this episode ends.

You won't always agree with us.

But you'll keep listening.

Let's binge.

Here's an uncomfortable thought.

You probably think you're smarter than the average person.

Most people do.

In fact, studies have shown that the overwhelming majority of people believe they're above-average drivers.

Do the math.

That shit doesn't add up.

Somebody has to be average.

Somebody has to absolutely suck behind the wheel.

But almost nobody volunteers for that category.

That's because your brain has a favorite person.

You.

And your brain lies to you constantly to protect that relationship.

Not big lies.

Small ones.

The kind that slide past without you noticing.

"I'm not addicted."

"I could quit whenever I want."

"I only doomscroll for a few minutes."

"I don't care what other people think."

Bullshit.

You care.

I care.

Everyone cares.

If nobody cared what other people thought, nobody would spend two hundred bucks on shoes that do the exact same damn thing as a fifty-dollar pair.

You know what's really expensive?

Approval.

People bankrupt themselves chasing it.

Here's the part that gets weird.

Every single day, thousands of people are trying to manipulate you.

Not because you're important.

Because you're breathing.

Companies want your attention.

Apps want your time.

Politicians want your vote.

Influencers want your trust.

Advertisers want your money.

Your boss wants more productivity.

Streaming services want "just one more episode."

Hell... even your dog has figured out exactly what face to make when he wants a treat.

Manipulation isn't rare.

It's the default setting of modern life.

And the truly dangerous manipulation isn't obvious.

It's invisible.

Have you ever walked into a grocery store for one thing...

...and somehow left with forty-eight dollars worth of snacks you never intended to buy?

That wasn't an accident.

There's a reason milk is usually near the back.

There's a reason candy sits next to the register.

There's a reason casinos almost never have windows.

The less you notice the system...

The better the system works.

Here's another uncomfortable fact.

Your phone knows you disturbingly well.

Not because it's listening to every conversation—that's a popular myth with very little evidence.

It doesn't have to.

It already knows enough.

It knows when you wake up.

When you stay awake too late.

How fast you type.

Where you go.

What makes you stop scrolling.

What makes you laugh.

What makes you angry.

What keeps you staring at the screen just a little longer.

Think about that.

Some algorithm somewhere may know you're about to go through a breakup before you've admitted it to yourself.

It notices patterns.

Late-night searches.

Different music.

Changes in routine.

More time online.

Less movement.

Humans leave digital fingerprints everywhere.

We volunteer information we'd never tell another person.

Then we act surprised when ads seem creepily accurate.

Here's the kicker.

The algorithm isn't evil.

It doesn't hate you.

It doesn't love you either.

It doesn't give a damn.

Its job is simple.

Keep you engaged.

Because your attention is worth money.

Lots of money.

Which raises a weird question.

If something is free...

Who's the product?

Spoiler alert.

It's probably you.

Now before you throw your phone across the room...

Relax.

This isn't some conspiracy theory.

It's business.

Your attention has become one of the most valuable commodities on Earth.

And here's where it gets really uncomfortable.

Most people think they're making their own decisions.

Are you?

Seriously.

How many songs on your playlist did someone else recommend?

How many movies did you watch because everyone else was talking about them?

How many opinions do you hold because you've actually researched them...

...instead of because they fit your social circle?

Ouch.

Nobody likes that question.

Including me.

Humans are social creatures.

We've always copied each other.

That's how we survived.

If everyone in your tribe ran away from the bushes...

You ran too.

You didn't stop to ask for evidence.

Today...

The bushes are Twitter.

TikTok.

Reddit.

Cable news.

YouTube.

The instinct never changed.

Only the jungle did.

Here's something that'll really mess with your head.

Can you remember the last original thought you had?

Not something you repeated.

Not something you saw online.

Not a quote.

Not a meme.

An actual original idea.

Take your time.

It's harder than it sounds.

We're constantly absorbing everyone else's thoughts until it's difficult to tell where ours begin.

Maybe that's okay.

Maybe no idea has ever been completely original.

Or maybe we've outsourced too much of our thinking.

Either way...

It's worth asking.

Here's another one.

When was the last time you were truly bored?

Not reaching for your phone.

Not turning on the TV.

Not opening another app.

Just...

Bored.

Five minutes.

Ten minutes.

Nothing.

Silence.

People used to experience boredom all the time.

Now we kill it within seconds.

Standing in line?

Phone.

Waiting for food?

Phone.

Commercial?

Phone.

Bathroom?

Definitely phone.

We've become allergic to being alone with our own thoughts.

That's fascinating.

And maybe a little terrifying.

Because some of humanity's greatest ideas came from boredom.

Newton wasn't checking notifications when he started thinking about gravity.

Einstein wasn't doomscrolling.

Your brain needs empty space.

Instead we fill every crack with content.

This podcast included.

Yeah...

The irony isn't lost on me.

So maybe here's the challenge.

After this episode ends...

Don't immediately play another one.

I know.

What the hell kind of podcast says that?

This one.

Sit in your car for two minutes.

Take a walk.

Look around.

Notice how weird the world actually is when nobody's telling you what to think about it.

Because once you start paying attention...

You realize something.

Reality is already stranger than fiction.

It doesn't need better marketing.

It just needs people willing to notice it.

That's what The Binge is about.

Not giving you answers.

Giving you questions that are just uncomfortable enough to stick in your head.

The kind that show up three days later while you're standing in the shower thinking...

"...well...damn."

We'll see you next time.
